Growth Potential
The market for MS therapeutics is mainly split between five pharmaceuticals
(Avonex, Rebif, Betaferon/Betaseron, Copaxone and Tysabri). Tysabri
was reintroduced as monotherapy treatment for relapsing forms of multiple
sclerosis in 2006.
Although these are pharmaceuticals that can slow the progression of
the disease in some patients, the need for new and effective pharmaceuticals
in MS is substantial. All of the pharmaceuticals used for the treatment
of MS on the market today require frequent injections causing serious
discomfort for patients. Introduction of an efficacious oral treatment
would undoubtedly fuel further growth.
Another important growth factor is the trend towards early treatment,
in order to slow disease progression, resulting in larger treated patient
populations..
